Kentucky Plumbing Contractor (Journeyman/Master)

Requirements to Obtaining your License.

• Four years of experience as an Apprentice Plumber s required to qualify for the Journeyman license.
• No person, firm, or corporation shall engage in plumbing or engage in or work at the trade of plumbing unless the person, firm, or corporation maintains general liability insurance in an amount not less than two hundred fifty thousand dollars $250,000 and submits proof of compliance with workers' compensation and unemployment insurance laws of the Commonwealth.
• Proof of insurance required shall be submitted to the office prior to issuance or renewal of the active master plumber license
  

Work that can be Done Under this License

A Journeyman allows the construction, installation, alteration, maintenance, repair, remodeling or removal, and replacement of plumbing under the supervision, direction, and responsibility of a Master Plumber. A Journeyman may NOT pull permits or supervise other plumbers. If a Journeyman wants to run his own business, he must obtain a Master Plumber license or have a Master Plumber in his employ.

A Master Plumber is a person who assumes responsible charge, supervision, or direction of Journeyman Plumbers, Plumber's Apprentices and other persons in the construction, installation, or alteration of plumbing or who engages in or advertises or otherwise represents that he is permitted and qualified to engage in the design, planning, superintending, contracting for, or responsible charge of plumbing.

Applying to get your License

The licensing process is started by submitting a completed application to the state licensing board. Applicants are encouraged to have studied and prepared for the exam when submitting an application, as they will be given the next available exam date upon approval, and rescheduling is rather difficult. A $250 license activation fee that is due after passing the exam.

Exam Details

Master exam

• Examinations start at 9 a.m.
• A maximum of 2 1/2 hours is allowed for completion of the exam.
• Master exams are given at KCTCS (Kentucky Community Technical College System) campuses throughout the state several times a year.
• Master exam schedule is listed below.
• Master exam will be offered at the Frankfort office every Thursday morning at 9 a.m.
• Limit of five applicants per examination day.
• Applicant is responsible for scheduling his own exam date at least one week prior to taking the exam in the Frankfort office.

Journeyman exam

• Examinations start at 8 a.m.
• A maximum of five hours is allowed for completion of the exam.
• Journeyman exams are given at KCTCS campuses throughout the state several times a year.
